How Kaplan Arrests Work
Kaplan ranks as Vermilion Parish's second-largest incorporated place. It was home to 4,352 residents in the 2020 Census. Joshua Hardy serves as police chief, according to the current Kaplan Police Department page. Deputies with VPSO can also arrest people in or around the city. Parish emergency planning names Kaplan PD as a local agency. It also names the Abbeville jail as the parish's main lockup.
So two separate files can exist for one arrest. Kaplan PD may hold the incident and arrest report. The Vermilion Parish Correctional Center builds its own booking and custody record. That applies if the person is lodged there. An officer writes up the event. A booking entry logs the intake. Neither paper settles the court outcome. Not every parish inmate was arrested by Kaplan PD, and not every city case required a jail booking.
Where Kaplan Arrests Appear
The city website posts no arrest log, bookings page, or booking-photo feed. Its police page shares agency and contact details only. For parish custody, the VPSO Prisoner Search is the official online tool. It offers current-inmate searches. It also offers a rolling Last 24 Hours view.
| Source | Record layer | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Kaplan Police Department | City report by direct request | No verified online arrest feed |
| VPSO search | Parish jail custody and recent intake | Not a complete Kaplan log |
| VPSO booking line | Current custody confirmation | Phone check, not court outcome |
| Local news | Selected reported events | Story-driven and incomplete |
| Aggregators | Reposted county entries | Unofficial and possibly stale |
Gaps happen. The roster can skip a citation, a summons, or a release. It can also miss a case booked somewhere else. It may also list people arrested by other agencies rather than Kaplan PD. Booking photos are not promised for every entry, since Louisiana art. 234 can restrict their release.
Find Who Was Arrested
Trace the record from city event to jail custody. A blank result proves little. Intake takes time, web updates lag, names shift, and the person may already be out of custody.
- Open the official VPSO search and check the Last 24 Hours view for a fresh jail intake.
- Search by legal name and compare the arrest date, charges, facility, and arresting agency.
- Call booking at (337) 898-4430 for a time-sensitive custody confirmation.
- Contact Kaplan PD for the city incident or arrest report.
- Ask VPSO Records at (337) 898-4405 for the jail booking record, then use the proper court for disposition.
Each source answers a different question. "Booked" means processed at a jail. "In custody" describes status at one moment. "Released" means the person is no longer held there, not that the charge vanished. Someone sentenced and moved to state custody belongs in the Louisiana DPS&C locator instead of the county roster.
Note: Check spelling and timing before concluding that a missing Kaplan result means no arrest occurred.
Kaplan Police Record Requests
Kaplan's official page lists no record-request form, fee schedule, photo schedule, or promised turnaround. Do not borrow another city's fees. Send a written request to the police chief or the current city custodian, and ask how delivery should be made. Include the person's full legal name, the arrest date, the location, and any report or case number you have.
Request the incident report, the arrest report, and any legally releasable photograph as separate items. Louisiana Code of Criminal Procedure art. 228 opens the booking book and booking summary to the public. Louisiana R.S. 44:3 makes initial reports public within stated limits. Pending investigative material and sensitive details may be withheld or redacted. Article 234 adds its own limits on booking photographs.
701 N. Cushing Avenue
Kaplan, LA 70548
Police: (337) 643-8600
City Hall: (337) 643-8602
Use the current city page address rather than an older municipal document listing a different street number. Anyone booked into Vermilion Parish Correctional Center needs a separate VPSO request for the booking summary. The city custodian does not hold the jail's intake sheet.
Kaplan Arrest Posting Delays
The sheriff's roster says its Last 24 Hours tab covers inmates arrested in that window. It also warns that online entries may lag behind actual status. Updates come regularly, but no exact posting time is promised. A person just arrested may still be in intake. A release or transfer can also happen before the public entry catches up.
Treat the web result as a snapshot. Call the jail for short-term answers. A written records request gets you a lasting copy. The city itself publishes no Kaplan blotter, daily or weekly. Leave that gap as a gap. Don't fill it with an unofficial page dressed up as police data.
Kaplan Arrest News Coverage
Local outlets cover Kaplan arrest stories when they break. KATC's Vermilion section and KPEL's VPSO tag both track parish crime news. Vermilion Today does too. Its newspaper family includes the Kaplan Herald, which follows city incidents closely. None of these outlets promises a full list of every Kaplan booking, so treat them as spot coverage rather than an arrest log.
The city's own official Kaplan Police page lists current contact details and chief information for direct record requests.

That page is a police contact source. It is not a jail roster or a gallery of arrested people. Sites like Busted Newspaper and RecentlyBooked may surface county records with Kaplan labels. Mugshots.com carries a historical Vermilion page naming Kaplan among localities, while Arrests.org shows no active Vermilion count and Mugshots.zone has no Vermilion-local page. All are unofficial. Confirm jail status and court results through official channels.
After a Kaplan Booking
A booking charge is only the first label attached at intake. Prosecutors can amend it, drop it, or decline it outright. What happens next lives in the court file. Arraignment is the hearing where the charges get addressed. Disposition is simply how the case ended. Older Kaplan matters that no longer show online still exist in paper form. Ask Kaplan PD, VPSO Records, or the court that handled the case.
How long an entry stays searchable is not fixed. VPSO publishes no set window. Louisiana retention rules require each agency to keep a schedule. A roster entry rolling off the page does not mean the arrest record was destroyed. The Vermilion Parish recent-arrests hub walks through the county booking and court paths. See it for more depth.
Kaplan Arrest Window Limits
The parish portal offers a rolling Last 24 Hours view of bookings. VPSO publishes no 72-hour, weekly, or multi-day blotter. Kaplan's city site carries no daily bulletin or arrest archive either. Someone booked more than a day ago can still turn up in a current-custody name search, though the sheriff does not say how far back that search reaches or when names roll off. Calling it a Kaplan weekly log would be wrong.
That gap shapes the hunt after day one. Start with the current-inmate name results. If nothing comes back and you need a custody answer today, call the jail. Kaplan PD handles its own incident and arrest reports, while VPSO Records holds the booking summary. News stories and aggregator sites can offer leads, but they are not custody answers.
Weekends and holidays do not produce a separate Kaplan feed. VPSO promises regular updates, not a fixed posting schedule. Don't guess at a delay. For anything time-sensitive, verify with the office responsible.
Kaplan Records by Custodian
The fastest route depends on what you need. Kaplan PD keeps reports written by its own officers. VPSO holds the jail material for anyone booked at Vermilion Parish Correctional Center. The Vermilion Parish Clerk and the proper court hold the docket and disposition. Treat these as links in a chain, not three copies of one database.
A Kaplan request should separate the initial report from investigative material. Louisiana R.S. 44:3 makes eligible initial reports and booking records public. It shields sensitive and pending investigative details. Art. 228 spells out the booking book and the minimum booking facts it must contain. Photograph release falls under Article 234, a separate rule. A report can be released while an image is withheld under that scheme.
For older cases, ask each custodian whether the record still sits under an approved schedule. VPSO posts no booking-specific retention term. Kaplan posts none either. Louisiana's general baseline does not promise a record stays visible on a public website. It makes no promise for that record's full life.
